Never be Content with your Content.
Some simple ideas to keep your website updated and relevant
There is a misconception that once you have completed the designing and the actual building of your website that another box is ticked in the file of keeping your business on track. It is true that the look, the functionality and the actual launching of your site is an achievement worth celebrating. It’s done. Finished. But it is not over. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your website is not a book. It’s not even a pamphlet or a leaflet. If you want all that design thinking to bring rewards for your business, the sad fact is that it is never finished. Your website is an ongoing living thing that needs to be fed unique content on a regular basis. This means it will rank in search engines and can target potential and existing clients in a real way. Your site is an eternal ‘work in progress’.
If you choose not to revise and refresh your website as often as you can, it will languish at the back of the google searches, gathering internet cloud dust and not giving you the return you deserve. Yes, it still has your address (we hope). It tells people what you do and advises on how to access your goods and services (we presume). But it will not rank in searches and make any inroads in attracting new leads and clients. For that to happen, you need to give it some attention in the form of updated content. But how do you find the content, the text, the images, the information, the oomph and the time to update your website. Here are some ideas for easy content to keep your site vibrant and fresh.
Magic Keys – Keyword are magic
Industry specific keywords are the magic keys to attracting specific searches. Make a list. Update it regularly, and sprinkle those magic keys like fairy dust throughout blogs, text updates and any other way you can think to make your website sparkle in the search engine optimisation stakes.
This website is not working for me!
All the work organising the design, the pages and the images that led to the launching of your new website! Too often we are referred new clients who tell us that their website is not working for them. Often there is a need for a revamp, a restructure and a new way of approaching the website to reflect who your company is now. Often the website has been neglected with no updates or changes since the day it was born into the digital world. In that case, they are right, the website is not working for them and with a little bit of effort, it can be revived and renewed.
Check out the competition!
No harm to have a look at who is at the top of the searches. Look, Learn but don’t be tempted to copy. The genius Google people have made it so that anyone copying and pasting from other websites, actually increase the ranking of the original website. Of course, this should not be your only reason for avoiding plagiarism. Its unethical and you are more than capable of generating enough original copy so that others may be tempted to snatch your words, thereby pushing your site up the Google rankings. So grab some ideas for content updates on competitors sites, and revive your own website by unique and original text, images, links and videos,
Scanning the blogs
Add a blog! Don’t be deterred by thoughts of your ineptness as a literary genius. It is not a test. It’s an adventure! Pick a topic you know. Write some Bullet Points. Flesh it out with words. Funnily enough we’ve published a blog to make blog writing made easy and fill the page. Don’t panic. As long as you keep it simple, honest, get a friend to edit and use spellcheck, your blog will be fine. If it helps, you should be aware that most people scan rather than read. Blogs are an excellent way of informing customers, building authority in your industry and of using up all those lovely relevant keywords in an entertaining and informative way.
Images
Change the images and photographs regularly. A dusty photograph of The Team which includes ex-employees who may have gone to pastures new and does not introduce the friendly faces of existing staff, does not inspire. Likewise, update stock images and the general style design of your site. Again, it’s a quick and easy way to keep the website fresh.
